Our plants have grown tremendously in the last few weeks. We have had a bumps in the road but things are going well. We have been checking PH and ppm (parts per million). We have had to adjust the PH a few times. Our lettuce will grow best if the PH is between 5.5-5.8. It is a bit tricky to get the PH to stay put but we are working on it! 🙂 It has been interesting to learn how to use the different testing kits and tools.
We have graphed the growth of our plants over time and documented the “factors” that might have made the plant thrive or die. We are nearing the end of our growth “season” and will be harvesting our lettuce on March 5th. We are planning a salad party on March 5th!
In class one day we were talking about how cool it would be to make our own hydroponic systems at home. We started to brainstorm materials that we have at home that would make good systems. Mrs. Rowland gave us the senario of a family living in poverty in a small apartment who had little access to fresh foods what kind of system could be created to grow fresh veggies. We discussed the limitations of not being able to use a giant grow light. We got to build mini systems and presented them to the group. It was kind of cool to see that with only a few things you can make a pretty cool system! We voted on the most inexpensive and most productive system. -jk
