For our class we collected sap from maple trees at Central Middle School to make maple syrup. This year we collected a lot less than previous years. If we compare the differences between this year and last year the difference is astronomical. Last year the sap cooked down to 3 gallons, this year our sap only cooked down to 9.5 cups of syrup.
We believe that weather was responsible for this. In our area the temperature got unusually warm during the sap collecting season. We believe the bigger reason was because of warmer nights. Usually for good sap collecting you would want cold nights and warm days, but it ended up being warm day and night. So due to this not as much sap was flowing. We did this is Ada grand rapids Michigan.
